ISBN FAQ – Buying & Assigning Your ISBN
How do I buy an ISBN?
You can purchase ISBNs directly through our online store. We offer options such as:
- Single ISBN
- ISBN + Barcode bundle
- Multi-ISBN packs for creators publishing multiple formats
What happens after I purchase an ISBN?
Once you buy an ISBN:
-
You’ll receive your unique ISBN number.
-
We'll assign it to one specific book format.
-
We'll register the book’s metadata (title, author, publisher, format).
-
The ISBN becomes permanently linked to that version of your book.
Can I reuse the same ISBN for multiple books?
No. Each ISBN is permanently tied to one book and one format.
For example:
- Paperback = 1 ISBN
- eBook = 1 ISBN
- Hardcover = 1 ISBN
If you release a new edition or major update, you’ll need a new ISBN.
What is the ISBN assignment process?
Assigning an ISBN is simple:
-
Choose which book format the ISBN will be used for.
-
Enter your book details (title, subtitle, author, imprint).
-
Confirm the format (digital, print, audio).
-
Apply the ISBN to your cover file and metadata during publishing.
Once assigned, the ISBN cannot be changed or reassigned.
Do I need a barcode?
Print books sold in retail stores require a barcode version of your ISBN.
If you plan to sell physical copies through bookstores or wholesale channels, we recommend purchasing the ISBN + Barcode option.
What publishing name will show up?
It will be registered under East End Publishing LLC, which helps you look more established and professional.
Can I transfer an ISBN later?
ISBNs are not transferable once assigned. Always double-check your book details before finalizing the assignment.
Is buying multiple ISBNs better?
If you plan to publish across multiple formats or future projects, buying a bundle of ISBNs is usually more cost-effective and keeps your catalog organized.
